The nonprofit Breed Street Shul Project, Inc. (BSSP), a subsidiary of the Jewish Historical Society of Southern California, was established in 1999 to rehabilitate the Breed Street Shul and develop uses that meet the needs of its current neighbors. The Shul encompasses two historic synagogues in the Boyle Heights area of east Los Angeles. These include a 1923 un-reinforced brick building, designed by architects Abram M. Edelman and A.C. Zimmerman, and a 1915 wood-frame building. Both buildings were designated by the City of Los Angeles as Historic-Cultural Monument #359 on June 7, 1988 and were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 4, 2001 (to read the National Register nomination, click here). They are the last remnant of the once-thriving Jewish community in L.A.’s Boyle Heights neighborhood. |
